What are the differences between a configuration management plan and a configuration management system?
Configuration management plan.
Configuration management plan defines how you will manage
changes to deliverables and the resulting documentation, including which
organizational tools you will use.
A new version must be taken for each change made to
management plans. For example, the first revision of the scope management plan
could be 1.0, and when a new update arrives, it could be versioned as 1.1, and
if a major update arrives, it could be versioned as 2.0, and so on.
At a certain point of the project, there were a several
releases of each management plan and there will be belong to a version of a
project management plan as well.
For example, project management plan for version 1.3
includes scope management plan version 2.3 and schedule management plan version
1.6 and quality management plan version 1.3, etc.
How we will do this versioning including numbering, when a
new version will be published, when we take a new version of a project
management plan, etc. are describe in a configuration management plan.
In other word, configuration management plan describes how
we do versioning of changes in a project.
Configuration management system.
Versioning of project management plans, documents, and
project components can be managed using a configuration management system.
A change control system may be included in the configuration
management system because the significant cause of a new version of a
component, document, or plan in a project is a change. Therefor, change control
system might be under the configuration management system in a company.
The configuration management system is part of the project
management information system (PMIS) and contains the organization's
standardized, Configuration management tools, processes, and procedures these
describes common rules, policies, and procedure on how you do versioning in the
project.
In other words, a configuration management system encompasses
all aspects of project versioning.
