How to pass the PMP exam on first try

Is it possible to pass the PMP exam the first try?

Are PMP exams as difficult as we hear about?

Statistics indicate that 2 out of 5 individuals fail to pass the PMP exam from the first try but in fact, and from personal experience, it is easy to succeed the exam from the first try if we followed a specific plan and steps with a little determination and will.

In this article, I will introduce some of these steps that help a candidate for the PMP exam to pass it from the first time.

1- Study Books.

There are many books that the study is based on, but in fact it is necessary to study from the official book of the PMP certification, which is a “PMBOK Guide" book.

The book can be long, boring, and difficult to understand, but it is very important and establishes basic principles and concepts for PMP exam. Neglecting PMBOK will have dire consequences.

There are many sites that give a free copy of the book, but you must make sure that you are studying the latest edition of the book. Also, you can participation in the PMI site, which is not free, but gives many benefits, such as a reduction in the price of the official exam and getting paid free copy of the PMBOK Guidebook and discounts on many important books.

When studying from the PMBOK Guidebook, it is necessary to study in order from the first chapter to the last chapter, even if you do not like it or there is difficulty in the initial classes. This arrangement will help you gradually understand the PMP course and also because the course is interconnected as one unit.

2- Put a time plan.

Before starting the study, a specific time plan must be drawn up to prepare yourself for the exam. The plan should be divided into the study period, take experimental tests, and then the final review period to enter the exam.

The plan varies from one individual to another according to the study hours, comprehension, or experience of the PMP exam applicant. According to my experience, I took two months of study at a rate of 3 hours per day, then one month for experimental tests and final review.

3- Join a course or study a book for explanation.

After or during the study from the PMBOK Guidebook, there must be a book or joining to a course that explains all the topics in the book. There are lots of useful and interesting language explanation books. Below are the titles of the 3 most important books explaining PMP.

  •  PMP Exam Prep by Rita Mulcahy
  •  Head First PMP: A Learner's Companion to Passing the Project Management Professional Examby Jennifer Greene
  •  The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try by Andy Crowe

Also, according to the requirements for applying for the PMP exam, you must spend 35 hours in formal project management education and must be presented by the education or training organization have PMI accredited. So, these 35 hours can be used to build a strong foundation for basic concepts and if they are misunderstanding areas, training hours can help you to clarify them.

4- Taking experimental exams.

This is one of the most important points for passing the PMP exam from the first try. experimental tests do not just give you an indication of your readiness to enter the official exam, but also put you in the atmosphere of the official exam in terms of time management during the exam and the type of questions and most importantly, Where the questions come from. It also helps you to know your weaknesses and the parts that you want to re-examine. It is important that you do not despair when you get a few scores in the experimental tests because it is not a real measure of your level but training on facing the exam and eliminating the accompanying fear (which is one of the most difficult things during the exams) and with the passage of time and taking a lot of experimental tests will see the improvement for yourself.

There are many websites and books give free tests. I will publish a specific article to get to know these books and the most important free sites.

5- Time management

Time management is important during the preparation period for the exam and during the exam itself. The difficulty of the exam lies in its length in relation to the number of exam hours. Therefore, time must be managed wisely during the exam. It is permissible to increase the preparation period beyond the previously set plan, and there is no problem with that at all. It is important that you are well prepared for the exam when taking the official exam. Do not give up or leave studying for a week or more under the pretext of rest because this will take you longer to remember so, complete what you started.

6- Control nerves

Important for passing the PMP exam from the first try is to control nerves during the preparation period and during the exam.

During the preparation period, do not be afraid of the length or difficulty of the book, and do not be worried about getting lower marks while taking experimental tests. Be confident in God first and then in yourself. I read the book more than once (3 times) and passed more than one exam experimental. Do not look at the grades but look at your mistakes and try to avoid them in the following tests.

During the exam, do not be afraid when you do not know the answer to a question, leave it and answer the following. Focus is important during the exam, so you must take it adequate sleep on the night of the exam. Do not think during the exam about the number of correct questions or the number of questions you left and leave that until you finish all the questions, then if there is time, go back to the questions that you left and try to answer them even if you are not sure (the wrong answer not counted in the PMP exam). If you are not excellent in English and took the exam by English, ask for a translation when applying to the exam (the service Free). Calmness during the exam is the key to being successful the first time.

I hope that I have helped you with passing the PMP exam from the first try and good luck to everyone.
