PMP prep exam free course- Introduction & the environment in which project operate - Project Management Process Groups

In the previous article (PMP prep exam free course-Introduction & the environment in which project operate - part 6. LifeCycle) we took Project Life Cycle, during this article we will going to explain the Project Management Process Groups

- Project Management Process Groups

Project management have several knowledges area and under these knowledges areas there are several processes and these processes grouped under project management process groups.

Project management process includes:

  • Initiating
  • Planning
  • Executing
  • Monitoring & controlling
  • Closing

Note that life cycle can change from project to project but project management process groups are same.

The below figure shows interrelationship of each process group with each other.

As you see, initiating process group triggers planning process group. So, after documents and steps are ready to initiate a project, planning phase starts.

Then planning process group triggers execution process groups. After a proper planning of a project, execution phase starts, and this is the phase will most of the project work is delivered.

Monitoring & controlling process group is only process group that interact with all four processes groups because this process group checks whether the project is going as planed and whether everything is okay.

The last process group is closing. Closing process group helps to complete and close the project after all objectives of the project are met or if the project is terminated in middle.

The below figure mention the process groups are initiated and executed in each project

For small project, all phases can plane as a whole project as per the above figure.

But if is a large project and each phase of the project is big enough to consider as a separate project then the below figure shows project management process groups are initiated and executed separately in each phase of the large project.
