Employer/ organization responsibilities under OSHA.


OSHA standard for occupational safety and health administration. An agency of the US Department of labor.

OSHA determined some responsibilities to the employer as per below:

- Providing workplace recognized and compliance with OSHA standards.

- Keep records of injuries and illnesses.

- Set up a reporting system.

- Provide copies of logs, upon request.

- Post annual summery.

- Report within 8 hours all work related to fatalities.

- Report within 24 hours all work related to inpatient hospitalization, amputations, or losses of an eye.

- Provide medical exams when required by OSHA standards and provide workers access to their exposure and medical records.

- Not discriminate against workers who exercise their rights under the act (Section 11c)

- Provide and pay PPE.

Also, OSHA required employers to provide training to workers such as but not limited to:

  • Chemical right to know.
  • Fire protection.
  • PPE.
  • Confined spaces.
  • Required to handle or use poisons, caustics, and other harmful substances.
  • Who may be exposed to job sites where harmful plants or animals are present.
  • Required handle or use of flammable liquids, gases, or toxic materials.
  • Required to enter confined or enclosed spaces.


OSHA requested from employer to provide reporting and recording checklist which must include:

- Report each worker's death.

- Report each incident that hospitalizes 3 or more workers.

- Maintain injury and illness records.

- Inform workers how to report an injury or illness to the employer.

- Make reports and records available to workers.

- Allow OSHA access to records.

- Post annual summary of injuries and illnesses.

The form employer must keep are:

 - OSHA 300 log.

Log of work-related injuries and illnesses is used to list injuries and illnesses and track days away from work, restricted or transferred.

- OSHA 300 A.

Summary of work-related injuries and illnesses must be posted from01/02 to 30/04 of the year following the year covered by the form.

- OSHA 301 or equivalent.

An injury and illness report is used to record more information about each case.

The employer also requested to post a copy of each citation at or near the place where the violations occurred for 3 days or until the violation is fixed whichever longer.
