- PURPOSE and SCOPE.
The purpose of this Method Statement for Installation of Floor & Wall Tiles is to outline and describe in detail the procedure, material and labor required to undertake the work or activity in a safe and controlled manner.
This activity should be performed with strict compliance and implementation of Safety Requirements & Procedure, standard practices, and project specifications to complete the work.

defer depending on the condition of the area encountered.

- PROCEDURES.
Prior
to the commencement of this activity or work, necessary work permits shall be
obtained as required in the contract condition.
All
HSE activities related to the Project, will be based on the Company issued HSE
Management System guidelines.
All quality assurance and quality control activities will be in line with the
specified requirements of the contract and QMS.
- Preparation/Planning.
APPROVALS.
- Before commencing, Contractor shall obtain the necessary approval for the subcontractor/applicator and their proposed material.
- Ensure to obtain the approvals for the detailed shop drawings for the Tiling Works.
- Ensure that this Method statement is approved by the Consultant.
- PRECONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY.
A toolbox talk will be initiated by the HSE Team to the personnel who will perform this
activity.
Review the relevant documents to verify whether the preceded activity was completed
and approved by the consultant.
Contractor will locate all the construction joints in the shop drawing and shall be approved
by the Engineer before the work commences.
QA/QC Representative will verify that all the apparatus and instruments used to check the
quality of material and conditions were all calibrated with supporting documents.
Allocate a dedicated Site Engineer to supervise this activity that will ensure that this
Method Statement, ITP, and other specific documents related to this activity.
Delivered materials should be verified by the QA/QC Representative and must be
inspected by the Engineer.
Store materials in dry area out of direct sun light and as directed by the material manufacturer.

- Execution.
Tiles type, color, mortar mix, glue, grout, shop drawings and method statement of installation shall be approved from consultant.
Approved mockup and sample shall be available at site and the materials delivered to site shall be checked with respect to the approved sample.
Tiles of approved sizes shall be used for laying.
Ensure the MEP clearance obtained.
Working area to be restricted for unauthorized entry.
The surface to which tiles are to be fixed shall be thoroughly dry before fixing commences and free from all defects.
The areas to be tiled shall be brushed clean and all traces of grease, oil, loose particles, etc. must be removed.
In wet areas, check that approved water proofing is completed as per manufacture's instruction, recommendation, and tested for leakage and cleared from all disciplines with approved clearance.
Ensure that the laying of tiles shall be as per the direction and pattern agreed with the consultant.
Before laying of tiles, ensure setting out shall be done by the surveyor.
Tile layout and start point on floors and walls shall be follow the layout on floors/walls as per approved shop drawings.
- Wall Tile.
Wall plaster (if required) shall be finished rough (Scratch coat).
Plaster curing period shall be completed before start of tiling work.
To ensure rows of tiles are truly horizontal, a level line shall be established to position the starting course.
Tiles of specified and approved sizes shall be fixed to wall surfaces with approved adhesive.
Mixing of adhesive shall be strictly followed in accordance with manufacture's recommendations.
Adhesive shall be used as per manufacture recommendations.
Apply floated of adhesive to dry background and comb the surface with the recommended solid bed trowel.
Fill any keys and apply thin even coat of adhesive over the entire back of each tile.
Press tiles onto bedding with twisting/sliding action to give finished bed thickness recommended by the manufacture.
Tamp the tile with rubber mallet to obtain required adhesion and level.
Tiles shall be laid with required spacers to align horizontal and vertical joints.
Lay tiles to pattern in accordance with shop drawings.
Excessive mix of adhesive shall be removed with a damp cloth before the materials has set.
The vertical joints shall be maintained plumb for the entire true level and plane by uniformly applied pressure.
Joints in wall tiles and fittings, after edges of tiles have been thoroughly cleaned it shall be grouted neatly with approved grout.
Grout shall be applied to the spaces between the tiles using sponge or a small piece of the soft cloth.
Ensure that joints are free dust and debris.
Force grout and fill joints completely too entire depth, tool to an approved profile, clean off surface and level free from blemishes.
Rub wall tiling with a dry cloth when joints are hard.
Keep expansion, movement nd control joints are required as per approved shop drawings. Joints shall be free of mortar or grout.
- Set dry mortar to accept tiles is applied, no voids under the tiles occur. Grind off high spots and fill-in low spots as necessary to ensure no voids occur.
- Preparation of Floors for Wet Areas: Apply tile adhesive to the protection screed floor in the required thickness.
- Tiles shall be placed according to level shown in drawing and shall be placed firmly with the help of rubber mallet.
- As per survey reference level point, tiles shall be laid level or enough slope to drain (1% slope) in wet areas as required.
- Care shall be taken in wet areas to avoid/prevent low spot and pooling of water.
- The tiles shall be neatly cut, grind rough on exposed edges around pipes & other obstructions.
- Make provision of floor drains as per approved shop drawings.
- When the installation has hardened sufficiently a thick grout of cement mixed with a minimum amount of water/approved grout shall be prepared and brushed over the floor until all the joints are thoroughly filled.
- Application shall be as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
- Surplus grout material shall be removed with a dry cloth.
- Do not saw-cut joints after installing tiles.
- Provide movement joint not less than 6mm and shall be located as required as per approved shop drawings.
- The completed floor tile should be avoided from traffic for at least 24 hours.
- The joint width shall not be more than 3mm & joints to be true to the line, continuous and without steps as per approved shop drawings.
- Control.
To acquire the specified requirements, follow the Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) in this method statement that will serve as a guideline for the Construction Team and QA/QC Team in monitoring, inspection, and testing.
A checklist for this activity will be used by the Construction Team to identify each point to be inspected at every stage of the activity.

The QA/QC Representative will verify the compliance and completeness of the work by inspecting it and reviewing the same checklist.
