PMP exam changes in 2020. What is changes and the differences in PMP exam content between PMP exam 2019 and PMP exam 2020.


According to PMI information on its PMI website, PMP certification exam takers will set for the new PMP exam content outline by the 2nd of Jan 2020.
Note that, first, the first planned exam change date was the 1st of July 2020. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, PMI announced that PMP exam changes is moving to 31 of December 2020.

The different in PMP exam content between PMP exam 2019 and 2020.

To know the differences between the two-exam content, we need first know the content of each PMP exam.

- What is current (2019) PMP exam content?

The latest PMP exam changes according 2015 and since then the PMP exam content base on 5 domains.
These domains are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/ controlling, and closing.

The below figure describe the current PMP exam content and percentage of each domain in the PMP exam.



The current PMP exam content focusing on the stages of the project lifecycle as domain and on each domain are several tasks.

The current PMP exam assess the PMP exam candidate’s knowledge and experience based on these tasks’ knowledge and skills for each domain.  


- What is the new PMP exam content outline?

The new PMP exam will be focusing on 3 domains:

             1-     People.
         2-     Process.
             3-     Business Environment.

About half of the examinations will represent predictive project management approaches and other half will represent the agile or hybrid approaches.

Predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches will be found in the three domains area which mentioned above. 

The below figure explain the percentage of each domain on the new PMP exam.


The new PMP exam content will have tasks under each domain as well as current PMP exam. However, there is a new term “enabler” in new PMP exam content.

- What is the domain, tasks, and enablers that is will coming    with the PMP exam changes?

Domain.
Defined as high-level knowledge area that is essential to the practice of project management.

Tasks
The underlying responsibilities of the project manager within each domain area.

Enablers.
Illustrative examples of the work associated with the task. For example, task statement is managed conflict, enablers of this manage conflict task are:

- Interpret the of source and stage of the conflict.
- Analyze the context for the conflict.
- Evaluate, recommend, reconcile the appropriate conflict resolution solution. 


- New PMP exam content crossover Map.

PMI has published the new PMP exam content crossover Eco Map which will help the PMP examiners to identify areas of content which changed in the new PMP exam content.

This document is the current mapping the PMI certification team is using to determine what is existing inventory can be reused in the new exam.

There are brand new sections in the exam and will need to have content created, this mapping document is attended to help you to get start to update the PMP course content.

Along with the Eco, the mapping document will be one of many resources the PMI will provide on the upcoming months to help the PMP trainer providers to update the course work to help student to prepare to the new PMP exam.

- Domain content location.

People (42%)- current PMP course may have limited content to address this new domain.

Process (50)- Current PMP training materials may have a fair amount of content to address this new domain.

Business Environment (8%)- current PMP training programs may have very limited content to address this new domain.


- New enablers coming with new PMP exam.

·        Measure training outcomes.
·        Maintain team and knowledge transfer.
·        Assess behavior through the use of personality indicators.
·        Analyze personality indicators and adjust to the emotional needs of key project stakeholders.
·        Assess opportunities to deliver value incrementally.
·        Support the team to subdivide project tasks as necessary to find the minimum viable product.
·        Coordinate other projects and other operations.
·        Recommend a project methodology/ approach (i.e., predictive, agile, and hybrid).
·        Use iterative, incremental practices throughout the project life cycle (e.g., lesion learned, stakeholder engagement, risk).
·        Confirm approach for knowledge transfers.
·        Classify compliance categories.
·        Determine potential threats to compliance.
·        Use methods to support compliance.
·        Analyze the consequences of noncompliance.
·        Determine necessary approach and action to address compliance needs (e.g., risk, legal).
·        Measure the extent to which the project complies.
·        Verify measurement system is in place to track benefits.
·        Evaluate delivery options to demonstrate value.
·        Assess and prioritize impact on project scope / backlog based on changes in external business environment.
·        Recommend options for scope / backlog changes (e.g., schedule, cost changes).
·        Continually review external business environment for impact on project scope/backlog.
·        Support organizational change.
·        Asses organizational culture.
·        Evaluate impact of organizational change to project and determine required actions.
·        Evaluate impact of the project to the organizational and determine required actions.


- Summary of the PMP exam changes.

The below table explain the different between current and new PMP exam content.


This table might mislead that the PMP exam content shrinking after the PMP exam changes. However, this is not true.

The content of PMP exam which is PMBOK is remain the same and the content is not change.

Current PMP exam focuses on project lifecycle stages as domain in other hand the new PMP exam content focuses on people, process, and business environment as domains.

The new PMP exam results may show performance on three domains (that is forecast).

PMBOK does not change. Still the main lighthouse to be inspired for the PMP exam content.
Agile, hybrid and tailoring approach will cover 50% of the PMP exam, it was less in current PMP exam content.
